Where There’s Smoke…

There’s usually fire.  At least that has been the case this week.  With the excessive wind we’ve had for most of the week, combined with the really dry conditions, it’s just asking for fires to start out in the field.  There were two on Monday and one today.  The two on Monday were quite a ways from us, but today it was only twelve miles away or so.  I headed out to see exactly how far from us, and if it was reasonably close, to call back to the combine, so that we could bring our water truck.  Dad did  end up bringing the water truck, but by the time he got there the fire was pretty much under control, so we went back to the combine.  I am not sure how this one started, but I do know that one of the earlier ones started because a knife section on a header hit a rock.  It’s so dry and windy, the fire started from one teensy little spark.

A few minutes after we first saw smoke:When I was halfway there about 10-15 minutes after first seeing smoke:From just a little ways away, just when I got there:

Harvest fires are so scary. I’m glad they were able to get this one under control so quickly.

They are scary. And after you have been close like I was yesterday, the smell of straw smoke sticks to you, and that’s all you can smell until you shower. Which makes you constantly check the sky, just in case there is actually another fire.
