Once upon a time, before we had the drill before the drill we have now, we used a shoveled cultivator for seeding.  Probably one of my first duties ever, was to sit underneath the cultivator every spring and change the shovels.  It took a long time, but it had to be done, since the shovels wore off quite a bit every year.  I don’t think every shovel had to be changed every year, but quite a few did.

Now we have a new drill with something more like spikes than shovels.  They don’t move as much dirt around, which apparently is better, and we don’t have to sit under the drill and change them all nearly as often.  Now those old cultivators are parked behind my house in the corner of the field.  We hadn’t actually used either of them for awhile, but this year, with all that unseeded land, one had to be pressed into service again.  So for a few days, we are back to shovels.

About Kathy

I'm a twenty-something who loves animals, farming, photography and cooking/baking. Luckily enough, photography works really well with the other three subjects, so I carry my camera around practically everywhere. Other than that, my life is pretty uneventful.
